The GFCI receptacle has an auto-monitor function that continuously self-tests every 5 seconds in order to provide protection. In an event critical components are compromised, or the GFCI can no longer provide ground fault protection, the GFCI will provide visual indication or repeatedly trip to disconnect power to the receptacle.
In 2015, both Canadian and American certification bodies (CSA, UL and ETL) introduced changes to the standard requirements making a "self-testing" feature mandatory for all GFCI Duplex Outlets manufactured after September 2015.
